:::A Journey to the Tale::: by designtu :::A Journey to the Tale::: by designtu

Wake.. from your sleep
The drying of your tears
Today we escape, we escape

Pack.. and get dressed
Before your father hears us
Before all hell breaks loose

Breathe, keep breathing
Don't lose your nerve
Breathe, keep breathing
I can't do this alone

Sing.. us a song
A song to keep us warm
There's such a chill, such a chill

You can laugh
A spineless laugh
We hope your rules and wisdom choke you
Now we are one in everlasting peace

We hope that you choke, that you choke

That Radiohead is referenced quadruples every emotion I could experience as I am pulled into the scene.

i really love the image you have created here, it is truly awesome and it has such a dream like quality to it; it just sucks my attention right in. personally i would love to write a critique with the dA feature, but it is apparently too exclusive and confusing for me xD(and i'm probably don't qualify to write one either)
but i really like this illustration so i'm just gonna type some mindless rambling here.

there doesn't seem to be much to say about the technique and color of the image, i feel that they work and fit the expressive nature and surreal quality of the image. the contrast of the warm light at the foreground and the cool light in the background adds to the dream-like state of the illustration too. all the detailing really took my breath away, the texture on the tree at the foreground, the careful treatment of the reflecting surface of the water, and the speckles of light on the shore ground; i learned quite a few things from looking at this illustration. all the characters and creatures look like they belong in this little mystical universe; the towering figures of the antler creatures over shadowing the small characters definitely highlights a struggle in this narrative illustration. almost every element of this image is in harmony with each other.

the one exception to this harmony is the wonderfully illustrated tree in the foreground, it serves its purpose both as a lead in device and a framing device; however because of its careful details of the texture and highly rendered form, it is undoubtedly competing attention with the action (the boy trying to save/help the teddy) that is taking place in story. one of the notions that prompted me to write this mini-critique is wanting to find out the reason of exerting so much focus on the tree? (cuz im bloody curious xDDD ) my focus on the image is somewhat trapped by the personal touch to the base of the tree. it almost feels like the lead guitarist is stealing the spotlight from the vocalist during a non-instrumental portion of a song; both equally amazing but leaving the audience struggling to decide who to follow. was it based on a personal decision? or is it because the tree is not an element of the setting but is another character in this story? why i asked the last question is due to the fact that the tree, an inanimate object is given so much life quality (the warmth of color and shine of light) oppose to the soulless antler creatures. is the tree providing a safe haven? but yet the single sinister branch seems to deter that idea.

i love all the contrasting relationship within the image, the play of different height and body sizes, and warm and cool colors, they all serve a function in telling the story. i have yet to master this skill, your illustration has really given me a few heads up on how to illustrate a more compelling image. a few personal odd quirks though, the spacial relationship between the closer antler creature, the teddy and the boy seems so even (you can almost draw an equilateral triangle between them), thus making the antler creatures less threatening than they are ought to be. but i have yet to completely decipher the story, so i'm not sure if that point holds. the next odd quirk my brain is not willing to let go is the speckle of cool light in the background, it is about 100 pixel from the top right corner and 50 pixel down; the single speck of blue light is right next to the speck of warm highlight on the branch in the foreground, since both are similar in value and close in proximity it almost feels like the dash of blue is in the foreground.

lastly i have repeat myself YET again, this illustration is truly awesome, i really love it, and hopefully my rambling did not rub off as rude and arrogant, if they did i apologize in advance.

lastly lastly (i promise this is the end!! really xDDD) thank you so much for sharing the wonderful art you've created, do keep up the good work~!

Hello there Aqua, Im his(designtu) friend.
First of all, he is low on english a bit.(just like me, just bit lower then me :P ) So he cant answer tons of english messages.
But when he saw your's, he was definately sure there were precious comments in it, so he called me and asked me about your comment, and i translated him.

Now im writing his reply!

"Thank you very much because of that nicely and kindly written critique. As i learned from my friend, you mentioned tons of things about the work here.
I would like to enlight you about them.

First of all, you have really brilliant eyes, to catch the details on the foreground tree. Yes, u are right, it was serving a purpose at the beginning of the work.
Actually there were two kids, one of them is who you can see atm, and the other were, hiding in a shelter in the tree, trying to reach his friend to catch him up. But i thought it was unneccesary rescue, because there is also another rescuing happening at there. So i decided to remove it, but i already took time on the detaiing tree, because of the shelter thing. I didnt want to loose them. So i decided to think as that tree is a safeguard for that child at there. He will hide behind it when he got the teddy bear. I hope i could give that impression.

And about lighting, like i said, this work is a result of too many different objects, etc. Let me say, u can see 14-15 layers out of 60-70s (just telling the ratio)So yes, sometimes, im making few mistakes that you cant return to fix it.

So this was basically a confess actually, but its the answers of your questions. :)

And mate trust me there were nothing rude in your comment, that made me soo happy.

Have a nice day!"

Murat Turan.
